There is a TON of confusion about the 3070, 3080 and 3090 from NVIDIA so today I am going to try and answer the most common questions about this launch...

  • I'm tempted to buy a 30 series card (70 or 80) to replace my GTX 1070FTW, but at the same time, I really know that I should wait for the second wave that's probably going to take place next year (the 'super' or 'ti' cards). Since I play at 1080p (with plans to move to 4k soon), I'll watch how everything develops from here on...

  • My EVGA GeForce GTX 980 TI (that I bought 4+ years ago) requires 1 x 8-pin, and 1 x 6-pin. Fortunately, SeaSonic's 8-pin cables are modular themselves, so you can make a 6-pin an 8-pin (or vice versa). There's also 8-pin cables that turn into 2 x 4-pins.

It'll depend on price per performance, so go team RED or GREEN.

  • PC "Water-cooling" isn't really water-cooling because it just recirculates the same water and relies on air to remove the heat from that water. For this reason, so-called "water-cooling" for PCs is a waste of time and money. You think you are getting better cooling, but that better cooling is very short lived. What is actually happening is that you are heating up the water. Water can store quite a lot of heat, but if you use your PC for hours/intensive tasks, you'll be back to just air cooling pretty quickly. The rate of heat-transfer is dependent on the temperature-gradient and so-called PC water- cooling can't remove heat efficiently. The water spending a significant amount of time in rubber hoses etc adds to this inefficiency. However, for graphics-cards, where it isn't possible to mount a huge heat sink and fan, it does have some merits, but only if you have all the PCI express slots populated.

  • I feel the way you explained things still confuses people because the choice of words. Using "reference card" or "reference design" mislead people to think you are talking about the FE Card. Nvidia don't call those cards that anymore since the creation of the FE name. What continues to exist is the reference PCB, which in this generation FE cards do NOT use, they have the custom/unique V shape FE PCB. And the reference PCB exists, and is the one the major of the AIB cards will use besides their top / special tier cards like FTW3 and etc that usually use a custom PCB. At least that's what I understood from GN video.

However I going to wait for the rtx 3080 card and being that the vermeer 4000 is possible to be released next and not knowing how long will I be able to get my hands on the amd 4000 would it be best to keep the 3950x and just wait on the 3080 card ? Because if I return the 3950x I may not be able to build until next year the way its looks. Thanks.

  • Personally I'm unsure what to do... I've got a 3 year old Skylake system running X2 1070 REF cards in SLI with water cooling blocks on them. I'm starting to consider a whole new system build, I'm just not sure how much of the old system to sell off and how much to keep. I'm definitely not the early adopter type, so I may just let the market level out before I make any decisions in the graphic card department.

  • No one ever talks about how Ampere's cuda core being 30% slower than Turing's cuda core. So, the cuda core count doesn't scale up core for core. So, Ampere's cuda core has double the FP32 compute and is a dual FP32 unit. It just 30% slower core for core. So, keep that in mind.

  • I am going to switch to a 3070 (or 3080), coming from a Vega 64. Nvidia is set this time, since i plan to learn and use some Ai Stuff which is for many aspects cuda exclusive. (Also DLSS 2.0 and Raytracing are super cool) The only thing i am little bit worried about are the 8GB of VRAM on the 3070: We already saw the 2080 Super (also 8GB) run out of VRAM when you try to use Raytracing in Wolfenstein, while the 2080Ti with 11GB was just fine. The Ai stuff also need lots of VRAM. The 3080 has 10GB and is way faster but its a little bit out of my Budget. The Lenovo listet 3070Ti with 16GB of VRAM would probably be perfect for me.

    • @KrazedOmega .. I bought the 2070 Super FE 14 months ago on release day. It cost $499.99 and came with a 2 game bundle of "Control" & "FC New Dawn" worth $90 at the time so I have no regrets and exactly it was a good buy at the time! Not like it won't still play 1440p/144hz anytime soon. My guess is, with talk of a 3060ti coming out, that the 3060 will have 2070S/2080 performance at $399.99 while the 3060ti will be a close to 2080 Super performance at $449.99. I'm waiting on a 3070ti or 3080ti tho, cuz I want more Vram than the 3070 and 3080 do offer. • As far as Titan cards go, you only need to look at the RTX Quadro lineup. Nvidia kneecapped their low end Quadro cards with the Titan line of cards. Nvidia does not want to hurt their Quadro line sales oh, so they do not have a Titan card, but they have a very high-end Enthusiast card instead. I suspect that the difference between at the low-end quadro card and the high-end Enthusiast card will be drivers that disallow virtual sharing. I also expect the low end Quadro card to retail for around 2,000. One look at their current RTX Quadro lineup kind of makes clear that they are doing away with the Titan prosumer card line.
